Mobile phone use at Laugalækjarskóli

Our shared vision at the school is that student interactions during school hours should be characterized by active and positive communication that enhances their social skills. With this in mind, we are introducing new rules for cellphone use during school hours. We call these rules "phone-free time."

Phone-free time - student cellphone use policy

Mobile phone use by young people doesn't inherently interfere with positive social interaction. We acknowledge that mobile phone use can be both constructive and enjoyable. However, we aim to reduce screen time and encourage students to engage in face-to-face interactions during recess without technology. Many students struggle to limit their phone usage. Our phone-free policy also helps prevent unauthorized photography during school.

Students can always make calls from the school office when necessary. Parents can reach students through the school office at 411-7900

Phone-Free Policy - Implementation

Students must keep their mobile phones completely powered off during school hours. Parents can choose from two options to comply with the phone-free policy.

  1. Students leave their phone at home
  2. Students bring their phone to school but surrender it to administrators at the start of the day and retrieve it when school ends.

The school strongly recommends parents choose option 1. If parents feel it's important for their child to bring a phone to school, they can easily ask an administrator to store the phone during school hours.

If staff see a student with a phone, they will record "Unauthorized device use" in Infomentor and parents can then address the issue at home.
