School orientation Aug. 24

Welcome to a new school year, students and parents.

School orientation and the first day of Laugalækjarskóli's 67th year will take place Monday, Aug. 24, as follows:
- 7th grade students and parents meet at 9 a.m. in the school auditorium.
- 8th grade students and parents meet at 9:45 a.m. in the school auditorium.
- 9th grade students and parents meet at 10:15 a.m. in the school auditorium.
- 10th grade students and parents meet at 11 a.m. in the school auditorium.

Following a brief school orientation in the auditorium, students and parents will head to their homeroom teacher's classroom. Parents may leave after a short informational meeting with the homeroom teacher, while students stay to finish their first day. Students will receive lunch and initial learning materials that day, though the overall schedule will remain relatively light.

We will host special informational meetings for 7th grade parents in the school auditorium on Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 4 p.m. and Thursday, Aug. 20, at 9 a.m. These sessions will cover school operations and the major changes families can expect when transitioning to a new school. We will also leave plenty of time for questions and conversation. We will serve coffee and cookies. You only need to attend one of the two sessions.

Major renovations are underway throughout the school building — an upgrade we deeply appreciate, though it will require everyone's flexibility, patience, and consideration.  The first few weeks will pose some challenges for students and significant hurdles for staff. For instance, crews are updating seven classrooms and all office space, but we hope to have most rooms ready before classes begin.

We were happy to let the community store various trailers and camper vans in the school parking lot over the summer. Now, however, we need them removed as soon as possible to accommodate the 60-80 people working on site daily this week. If those camper vans aren't moved soon, they run a very real risk of being pressed into service as winter office space or classrooms. ;-)

Warm regards from the entire staff at Laugalækjarskóli,
Jón Páll, Sólveig, Eydís and Selma.
