Laugalækjarskóli is one of Reykjavík City's primary schools, falls under the Department of Education & Youth and its curriculum is built around the City's school policy and future vision. It emphasizes individualized learning and student cooperation, inclusive schooling, the well-being of students, school autonomy, and fruitful cooperation with the local community.

Laugalækjarskóli is a district school for students aged 12-16 in Laugarneshverfi (grades 7 to 10). Most students have previously attended Laugarnesskóli, which serves students in grades 1 to 6.

School meals are free for the 2025-2026 school year. However, the school still needs to track information about allergies and intolerances and limit food waste. Students must register for the school lunch program as before.

UNICEF Rights Respecting School

Rights respecting schools and after-school programs are dedicated to one of the fundamental principles of Icelandic education: democracy and human rights. The program emphasizes children's rights education for both children and adults, ensuring that children become active participants in a democratic society. To put the Convention on the Rights of the Child into practice, each Rights Respecting School develops an action plan.
 

Equality plan

The Laugalækjarskóli equality plan has not been reviewed or revised since before Covid. The review should take into account recent developments, as non-binary and transgender people have become more visible, adding new dimensions to the equality discourse.

During the 2022-2023 school year, the school received Rainbow Certification.

Evacuation plan

If the school's fire alarm system activates, evacuation should proceed as follows:

  1. The response team — consisting of the principal, assistant principal, department heads, information center project manager, office manager, cook, and building supervisor — will check the fire alarm control panel at the main entrance to determine the alarm's origin and silence the alarm.
  2. Teachers will arrange students alphabetically inside the classroom and gather necessary materials in case evacuation is required. Two members of the response team will go to the incident site and assess the situation. They will use the nearest landline phone or a mobile phone to call the school office and report the next steps—confirming whether it is a false alarm or if evacuation is required.
  3. If there is a fire, the school building must be evacuated — the person closest to the fire calls 112 and notifies the office that they have called emergency services. If it is a false alarm, notification will be given that the emergency situation has ended. The person at the office phone will notify the Security Center.
  4. If evacuation is necessary, teachers will prepare their classrooms for evacuation. Teachers will follow specific instructions posted in all classrooms.
  5. Students will not leave the classroom until the teacher receives confirmation that exit routes are clear. Each teacher is responsible for the class/group they are teaching when an emergency occurs. Before leaving the classroom, the teacher must remember to take the class roster and lock the door. Always use the nearest emergency exit. Evacuation route maps are posted in school hallways.
  6. At the assembly areas, it is crucial that students line up alphabetically at their class marker — the teacher will check the roster to ensure everyone has evacuated. The teacher will then inform the assembly area supervisor of the status, waving a red card if anyone is missing.
  7. The fire department arrives on scene. The assembly area supervisor will provide status information to the fire department.

Fire response procedures

Instructions for students and teachers:

  1. When the fire alarm activates, students and teachers should remain in their classrooms. The alarm will be silenced if there is no danger or if it is a false alarm.
  2. If the alarm continues to sound or is triggered again, students should line up alphabetically in the classroom. Teachers and students will wait for further instructions. Do not begin evacuation until directed by the emergency response team.
  3. If the school needs to be evacuated, check that the exit route is clear. If the fire is severe, it may be necessary to remain in the classroom—classroom doors are fire-resistant and can withstand high temperatures. Firefighters can rescue students through emergency exits, including windows.
  4. If conditions permit, students should take their outerwear and shoes. Students are encouraged to develop the habit of wearing indoor shoes.
  5. Students will follow their teacher in a line to the assembly area. Running and unnecessary noise are prohibited. Teachers must remember to bring their attendance list and lock doors when leaving the classroom.
  6. When students reach the assembly area, they should form a line under their class designation – teachers check the attendance list to verify all students have evacuated.
  7. Teachers report status to the assembly area supervisor – waving a red card if anyone is missing.
  8. The school secretary brings the absence record and compares it with the teachers' attendance records.
  9. In case of a false alarm, it's crucial that teachers use the opportunity to discuss the importance of fire safety with students and thoroughly review the evacuation plan.
