Mobile phone use at Laugalækjarskóli

Our shared vision at the school is that student interactions during school hours should be characterized by active and positive communication that enhances their social skills. With this in mind, we are introducing new rules for cellphone use during school hours. We call these rules "phone-free time."

Phone-free time - student cellphone use policy

Mobile phone use by young people doesn't inherently interfere with positive social interaction. We acknowledge that mobile phone use can be both constructive and enjoyable. However, we aim to reduce screen time and encourage students to engage in face-to-face interactions during recess without technology. Many students struggle to limit their phone usage. Our phone-free policy also helps prevent unauthorized photography during school activities.

Students can always make calls from the school office when necessary. Parents can reach students through the school office at 411-7900

Phone-Free Policy - Implementation

Students must keep their mobile phones completely powered off during school hours. Parents can choose from four options to comply with the phone-free policy.

  1. Students leave their phone at home
  2. Parents configure their child's phone to automatically shut down during school hours. Setup instructions are available here for Android phones and here for iPhones. We will update these instructions if better options become available.
  3. Students bring their phone to school but surrender it to administrators at the start of the day and retrieve it when school ends. Phones must be clearly labeled if choosing this option.
  4. Students bring their phone but keep it completely powered off during school hours - stored in their backpack or locker.

The school strongly recommends parents choose option 1. If parents believe their child needs to bring a phone to school, options 2, 3, and 4 are available. During the initial weeks, we will confirm which option each family has selected. If parents choose option 4 - student self-management - and the student fails to follow the phone-free policy, parents will need to switch to option 1, 2, or 3. The policy will be evaluated later in the fall semester and adjusted if necessary. While we recognize that parents and students may have diverse views on this policy, we request everyone's cooperation in following these guidelines.
